Peter Cartwright served his apprenticeship through the 'Master Builders' Block Training Scheme, where he was rotated through different employers to receive a greater range of experience in the bricklaying and construction industry.

Peter Cartwright was awarded the 'Apprentice of the Year' in 1975, and was nominated for the combined Top 10 Apprentices in Australia in 1976.

After completing his apprenticeship in March 1977, he commenced his own bricklaying business and has been a contractor ever since.
